COMPANY/PHILOSOPHYThe focus of my art has always been to create a reference caliber print. The time it takes is irrelevant. In my attempt to capture some of its beauty, nature and Gyotaku has rewarded me with a unique opportunity to make a small difference in our community with regard to awareness of the ocean as a resource. An outgrowth of my art has been the development of designs onto apparel. Many years ago, I was in the process of creating an original piece of Gyotaku. After finding a blank T-shirt, I printed the fish directly onto the shirt. Although crude, it was unique and caught attention wherever I wore it. My mom is a potter and many of her clients that came to see her saw that shirt hanging in the garage. They continued offering to buy it even as holes began to appear. As word spread about my venture into Gyotaku, the number of people that surrounded my undertaking grew. I wanted to return a part of my art to everyone that helped me and thought printing my art onto shirts would be a nice way to return the kokua. It’s wonderful that something started as a gesture of goodwill lead to our presence at the Craft Fair circuit. A pleasant result of modest commercial success is that a portion of our proceeds go to various causes that support the preservation of ocean resources, arts, & education that foster the growth of the next generation of ocean lovers. As with most “one man shows”, this endeavor is far from being a solo production. Through the years, my Nature Prints Ohana consisting of a highly skilled graphic artist, screen printer, sign printer, webmaster, fair producers, restaurant owners, art associations, scholars, fishing or diving partners, along with countless other organizations and individuals have given me the vehicle to carry out what is brought to you. Finally, I’d like to thank my friends & family, especially my parents, daughters and wife, who have been generous with both encouragement and inspiration, enabling me to nurture this artistic undertaking and turn our collective energy into something that can be shared with everyone. I hope you enjoy our website as much as we have bringing it to you. See you soon at the fairs! |
